HISTORIC LANDSCAPE

Lyveden Northamptonshire

The Site
Lyveden New Bield is an Elizabethan ‘secret’ summer house commissioned by Sir Thomas Tresham in the early 17th Century but never completed. The architecture is full of religious symbolism and the surrounding landscape includes a moat, orchard and labyrinth which make for a mysterious and intriguing sense of place in a rural setting.

Design Services
Tresham’s main residence was Lyveden Manor which the National Trust acquired in 2013. This provided the opportunity to rethink the visitor experience with a new point of arrival (as it would have been originally) with enhanced visitor facilities.

Results
A sensitive design was developed through analysis of the site and its hidden geometries and Luke Greysmith (for Cookson & Tickner landscape architects) oversaw delivery of the new vehicle and pedestrian infrastructure on-site with a light-touch design that maintains the special character and quality of place.
