PUBLIC REALM

Chiswick Market

The Site
A range of Sunday markets established in 2020 has brought much-increased footfall to a car parking area alongside Chiswick High Road. It has also drawn attention to the poor quality and condition of the public realm. LGLA Projects was commissioned to consider potential opportunities for enhancement.

Design Services
Concept plans were developed which adopted a multi-functional approach recognising the need for parking and market stall space but, through careful rationalisation, increasing pedestrian space and planting. The design also improved the ground conditions for the mature London Plane trees. A key element was also to introduce sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) in the form of a linear rain garden to take rainwater from the hard surfaces and allow it to permeate the ground. Flash flooding is a known issue on Chiswick High Road and the proposals aim to reduce pressure on the drainage system.

Results
Proposal plans have been submitted to the local authority and whilst full implementation is only likely in the long-term, the concept has been used to consider the space as a coherent whole, challenging perceptions and highlighting opportunities.
